Question
tough skin on haunches
tough skin on haunches
hello ma'am, do horses have tough skin on their haunches when compared to belly and neck. i already told you that we are provided metal curry comb to groom a horse. i can understand that it pains the animal. today i groomed a horse, when i started from its neck, horse was grinding its teeth. when i moved on to his belly, he started shaking his head. but, when i moved on to its haunches and groomed with same pressure, horse kept a cocked leg and i really wondered, he stopped grinding its teeth as well shaking his head. when i switched back to belly, he stiffed his leg on the ground and again started to shake his head. do horses like to get groomed on their haunches?

Answer
Rohit,

Horses definitely get groomed all over their bodies.

Their haunches are usually fsirly accepting of grooming pressure. I find the same on their neck and withers where they like to nibble st snd groom easch other.

Their bellies and faces are extremely sensitive. Metsl curry combs should no t be used on their bodies. Hard rubber ones are much nicer.

If a horse is swishing his tail he is showing you in the only way he can that he is uncomfortable.

Take a metal curry to one of your fellow stable groom friends.....how would they respond?
Horses can be more sensitive than we are.
