Question I have a 17.1 german warmblood who has worked hard in the pass show jumping, he was retired 3 years ago an since then been used for hacks only and treated like royalty. In the last week he has had real difficultys getting up after he has rolled or just lied down for a rest. When he trys he gets his front legs an does his best to push himself up, but his backlegs have no movement and almost looks like he cannot feel them . After a couple of attemps and a lot of encouragement from myself he gets up and his back legs are very shaky, after 5 mins he seems fine. I worry because he has been stuck and rub rore patchs on his hips and also worry that he may suffer stomach problems from not being able to move for a length of time. Is there anything i should know i could use to help this problem.
Answer Hi Tina,
There are various factors to take into account with the clinical signs your horse is exhibiting. I'm not a veterinarian, but it sounds like this has become a chronic condition which requires you to call your vet and make an appointment. He/she would be in the best position to diagnosis the issue and prescribe an effective course of treatment.
If you're in the Northeast, I suggest you call Dr. Vin (www.CenterforVeterinaryCare.com) or Dr. Myhre (www.MyhreEquine.com)
