Horses - shanking

Expert: Lyn Kamer, C.E.S.M.T. - 10/22/2009

Question
Hi, I have to write an argumentation paper and I chose the topic to be shanking because of all the different views people can have on this issue.  I believe in shanking for correcting a misbehavior, but not taking it out of control.  Could you give me your best description on why shanking is a positive thing and not negative if used correctly?

Thank You
Samantha

Answer
Samantha,

I agree with your views in that shanking, when used in the correct manner, is very effective in getting the point across when correcting unacceptable behavior.  Properly placed it will smart enough to get an unruly horse's attention.  It does hit acupoints on the horse's face so it mustn't be overdone which would, IMO, constitute abusive behavior by the person.  Also unacceptable behavior on the part of said person.

Lyn
