Question We recently purchased a horse from a couple who weren't exactly knowledgeable when it comes to horses. The mare is very large and even with exercise, she's not losing weight. We are wondering if she is pregnant. her udders are not full, but she is very wide and around the flank area she is very full and if you press her belly or the swollen-looking areas around her flanks it is very tough and not soft. We don't know if she has been exposed to a stallion recently because we have only had her for about a month.

Best advice I can give you is spend the bucks and get a vet to take a look at her. She sounds like she's most likely just very overweight but there is always the possibility that she's got something going on in her gut. She may need an ultrasound done or other diagnostic work. Get the vet involved in this instance. They can be much more helpful to you in this case.
