Horses/Re: horse with Stifle injury

Question
Hello:  We are looking for a throughbred jumper for my daughter and have found a possible horse.  It is a 17 hh gelding and we were told he is a great jumper but recovering for a stifle injury (they say from a possible kick.)  Having been sold a lame horse in the past which cost a fortune without any improvement, I am concerned.  Can a jumper with a stifle injury ever really be able to jump soundly, or is this likely to be an ongoing problem?  Thanks!

Answer
Absolutely the possibility of soundness exists.  Each horse will heal differently of course and also each injury is unique.  I respect and understand your rightful concern.  My suggestion is to have a vet you know and trust come by to perform a thorough examination.  Perhaps if you feel this horse is the right horse and the recovery is the only concern, then maybe you can work out a lease with first right of refusal dependent upon the horse's recovery.
