Subject: horse going through fencing
Question I have a two year old mare that is going through our new fencing. It is made of white covered wires that she just walks through. Now she has started doing this through our electric fencing. She has even gotten her legs tangled up and has rope burns on her legs. She has four other herd mates that she is with, but she wants to leave them!
Answer Hi Teresa,
Some horses can't be kept in by some fences. The first thing that you should do is to make sure that the other horses are not running her through the fence. Have you checked to make sure that your charger is working correctly? You will want to make sure that there are no shorts in the fence nor any weeds interfering with it putting out a charge. If the fence is working, then you may need to get a stronger charger. Bring her over to the fence and let her feel the charge. If neither of those work, you may have to build a solid fence for her in the pasture. Round pen panels or cattle panels work well and are movable.
