--Rick is a student of the horse. He can answer questions about sacking out (Desensitizing vs. Sensitizing), dealing with spooky, abused or ex-race horses, rearing, bucking, horses that won’t tie or load into a trailer, working in a round pen/round corral, starting colts, dealing with aggressive or so called "mean" horses, herd behavior, biting, kicking, hard to catch, using a bosal or hackamore, soft hands and direct reining verses neck reining. If you expect him to tell you feel good advice, you will be disappointed. 95% of all his answers will include "the problem is you and not your horse." About 95% of most answers that I give out are on my web site, so if you read it you will probably answer your own question and may learn a few other things. I am like Gordon Ramsey (Hell's Kitchen) and Simon Cowell (Idol), you may not like what I say or how I say it, but it will be pretty true and accurate, in my opinion, judging from my experience.

Experience
Rick is an experienced horseman with over 35 years of riding and handling horses. Rick grew up in Texas around horses and horse people. He has started colts, ridden many horses with behavior issues and worked with problem horses. (He believes that most horse problems are really people problems) He believes in and practices natural horsemanship and continues to read and study books by great horsemen. He routinely attends clinics, talks with and discuss horse issues with other clinicians and trainers. He has never met a horse that could not be fixed. Rick believes it is never the horse's fault and with proper handling, all problems can be worked out.

Education/Credentials
Rick has over 35 years experience in being around and working with horses. Over the years he has watched good horsemen do the right thing and seen the wrong things done with bad results. Rick has a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.

Question
What does the term "horse trader" mean?  We just moved to this state and I hear that term a lot now. I had never heard it before.  The way it is used does not sound like a good thing to be. My neighbor sold his horse to a so called "horse trader"  I'm wondering if I should find out who and maybe buy her back.  She was a very sweet older mare.

Answer
Horse trader is a person that trades in horses.  It is normally used in a negative way since MOST horse traders will tell you anything, will lie, will drug a horse, will cheat you, will sell you a dangerous horse, will tell you a horse is trained and broke when the horse has never been ridden and basically only use horses to make a buck, at the expense of the horse.  This term is close to "Horse trainer" nowadays.  Anyone that has ridden or owned a horse calls themselves a horse trainer so they can take advantage of all the new (mainly women) horse owners.  The horse market is ripe for the picking for unethical and low people.

I can sell a shock prod and nose chains (stud chains) made out of barbed wire, it I name it something like "the nice shocker" or the "be good chain", paint it pink and tie a feather to it.  There are so many women who are now able to own horses, yet their only experience is riding a horse as a kid a few times or watching the movie Flicka or Black Beauty.  So horse traders or horse trainers are like back yard mechanics.  When you see a woman coming you scare them, take advantage of them, and tell them all sort of BS and since they don't know any better and they tend to be more trusting then men, they believe you.

So when you hear the term horse trader or horse trainer, beware.  If this horse was sold to a horse trader then this person either re-sold it, drugged it to make it look or ride better, made up some phony papers to make it look registered and then turned it for a profit.

Not to put to fine a point on it, I would trust a used car salesman before I trusted a horse trader or horse trainer.  Then again, I know what to look for and I know when I am being fed BS when it comes to horses, most owners today do not have a clue about horses so it is very easy to take advantage of them.

So horse trader 101 is: when dealing with a horse trader believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear.  If this mare was old, he may have just sold her for meat and the horse went to a slaughter house or shipped to Mexico to be abused, used in a cruel rodeo or killed for meat.

Hope that clears it up.
