Horses - Behavior Issues, Breaking and Training - Won't bend to right

Expert: Sarah Lothmann - 3/22/2009

Question
I am currently riding a 5 yr old American Sport Pony.  I started her about 2 months ago and she is coming along very nicely except that when going to the right, she insists on carrying her head to the outside.  I have been working on lots of large and medium circles, changes of directions, and serpentines at the walk and trot to get the bend, but she doesn't seem to want to give.  Her teeth have been checked and are fine and she goes in a d-ring snaffle. She bends well to the left, but the right is very tough for her.  The problem is keeping us from moving forward with the training since it is harder for her to canter since she is not well balanced. Any suggestions would help.

Answer
Sorry for the delay, I've been recovering from an injury that has made it difficult to type.  So I will keep this short and simple.  Spin her on the lunge line in some side reins and when riding try some draw reins.  The two in combination should help!
