I have a 9 year old tb cross who has become very herd bound when i moved him to the current barn he is at. He has never been fantastic on the ground, but he has gotten progressively worse since moving to the place we are at now. The way the barn is set up, he only consistently sees two other horses and occasionally sees 7 others. He has become very attached to the two buddies. When i try to take him away from the other tow, he bulks and freaks out. Mind you, he is in his own paddock right next to the two others and can not go out with them as he will not let them eat or drink. If the two other horses are brought out of his sightt (to be ridden or groomed or what not) he bolts back and forth until he is sweaty and tired. Obviously, this can not continue to happen, but i don't know what to do. The barn owner tried to make the paddock smaller, but i'm not sure if this is the best for him as he has arthritic stifles. Do you know of anything i can do to help calm him down when he is alone?
Answer Sorry for the delay in a response, I've been recovering from an injury that makes it hard for me to type. So I must keep this short and simple. Ideally he needs to be turned out with a group of horses he can manage to get along with. This will calm him down significantly! Meanwhile when he is alone try giving him more hay to munch on and a radio by his stall.
