My 5 yr. old quarter cross gelding has been stumbling and had fore leg
tremors since he was 2 yrs. I had him evaluated by our local vet several times
with no findings. With that he had intermittent lameness. Last August 2008,
the lameness became more constant. I took him to a specialty Vet Hospital
for diagnosis. After numerous tests and x-rays they found a chip off the
coffin bone in the coffin joint. He had surgery and has recovered nicely. He is
no longer lame but still stumbles more than the average horse. At rest his
fore legs tremble after 15-20 min. of work. He fell with me prior to the
surgery and I was injured severely. I am very concerned about my safety and
his comfort. He is very wiling and not a complainer. I am wondering about
HYPP? He was a rescue foal out of Canada and I have no background on his
Sire, his Dam was Quarter Horse.
Thank you,
Dana
Answer HYPP certainly does seem like a possibility. It is easy to test for HYPP. All you need to do is send a sample of pulled mane to an equine DNA test lab and they can determine this for you. Here in Arizona, we have a fabulous lab that I have taken my saddle club to for a facility tour and presentation. The lab here is affordable, experienced, fast, reliable, and often works with international clients as well as the locals.
Ask for the director, Michal Prochazka, MD
Tell him Sarah Lothmann of the Equestrian Paddock Club in Scottsdale referred you, and he can help you get the test for HYPP.
