Horticulture - propagation of date palms

Expert: Dale Softley - 6/30/2008

Question
QUESTION: is there any way to propagate date palms?

ANSWER: nhmcmillan,
You have got me here. I will see what I can learn, and then we can learn together.  The must be a way to propagate them, other than by seed. Let me think about this a few days.  Where are you located, and what kind of soil are we dealing with?  My guess is there is a way to start branches or part of the stem in wet sand, but I don't know this, and must check it out.

QUESTION: I live in S.C. upstate.  We have alot of red clay, but that can easily be ammended.  Brought the date nuts small and large from Florida Saturday.

Answer
Please go to http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/006/Y4360E/y4360e09.htm, for a general discussion on propagation.  Drop me a note at dale@softley.com, and I will be happy to discuss this further.  We are allowed only so much space to answer questions.
