Subject: Lipstick plant curiosity

Question
We have had a lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus radicans 'Crispa') and it bloomed normally after about four years after we bought it. The blooms looked like this: http://www.toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?number=5&op=OR&first=...

However, the next year (this year), the bloom looks completely different, with waxy light pink petals and a maroon center. I have attached a recent picture of the plant...we are just confused as to why the appearance changed so radically! Thank you for your time.

Answer
Falguni,

The plant that is blooming now is a hoya plant, (Asclepias carnosa). It must have been in the pot with the lipstick plant and the lipstick plant has sinc died off but the hoya took over. The vines are very similar although they are not in the same family. The following sites have more info. http://www.plantoftheweek.org/week029.shtml

If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.

Darlene
