Question
i have a massangeana cane and its growing well. i've had this plant for a good long time. this year it grew a flower and what a beautiful aroma it gave off. is this normal and is it good for anything but the aroma?

Answer
Gene,

It is normal for it to produce a flower when it gets several years old and it is rootbound and healthy. If the flower is fertilized by the right insects it will produce seeds and grow more plants. However, plants grown from seeds may or may not be anything like the parent plant. I do not recommend allowing the flower to let seeds get mature enough to harvest them. Allowing them to get mature will weaken the plant. Enjoy the flowers, remove the blossoms as they fade, dry them and add them to potpourri. Take goo care of the plant and it may bloom again next year. Good luck.
