House Plants - papyrus plant

Expert: Darlene K. Kittle - 11/6/2009

Question
A renter neighbor moved leaving an outdoor papyrus plant.  The unit remained vacant and the plant became severely dehydrated.  I began sporadically watering it and it sent up shoots.  Ultimately I moved it to my unit, which is much shadier, and watered it more regularly.  The shoots have now died. It is in an 18" pot.  Should I consider dividing?   I can't give it more light; is it a hopeless case?  Thanks --

Answer
Phyllis,

It is a plant that needs sun. Do you have a friend that you might want to give it to who would like to try it?? It likes lots of water. It can sit in water constantly. In nature it is a plant that grows in sunny swampy areas. If you can't meet those conditions it is hopeless. If a friend can there is hope. Good luck.

Darlene
