House Plants - Houseplant identification

Expert: Darlene K. Kittle - 11/4/2006

Question
A friend just gave me a houseplant that was her grandma's who passed away and she did not know what kind it is and I have never seen this kind myself. It has jagged longer and thiner leaves that grow little babies from on them that fall off and seem to grow roots. The leaves are green w/ purple spots. It is the neatest plant I have ever seen but I do not know its type so I do not know how best to care for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Meliissa,

Your plant is a Kalanchoe daigremontiana, in the house it likes full sun, outdoors it needs part shade. You can see a picture and get more info at the following site.

It needs to be watered approximately once every 5 to 7 days when it is dry and it should never sit with water in it's drain tray. If you overwater it the roots will rot. I have grown it for years. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.

Darlene
