House Plants/Kentia Palm
Expert: Will Creed - 5/28/2007
QuestionHi, I've just purchased a plant and was looking for a little info on care, I am afraid of overwatering and have also heard rumour that I should dust the leaves but have been unable to confirm that, could you please advise.
Thanks very much, Ruari
AnswerHi Ruari,
Kentia palm is known botanically as Howeia forsteriana. It does best in a location with lots of bright indirect light, although it will survive in low light if you are very careful not to overwater. The best location is right in front of an uncovered north window.
Kentias are best kept potbound in small pots. In fact, yours will probably never need repotting. They are also very light feeders. Fertilize once or twice per year with a fertilizer diluted to half strength. They are tolerant of temperatures to the mid-30’s.
Overwatering is the most common problem with these palms. Allow the soil to dry out about a quarter way down in the pot before watering thoroughly. Never let the pot stand in excess water. Over watered Kentias will get brown tips and then yellow spots on the fronds. Under watering will cause brown tips and the fronds will droop somewhat.
Humidity and plant pests are rarely a problem for Kentias.
There is no reason to dust this plant any more or less than any other plant. If it looks dusty, then wipe the leaves clean with a damp cloth or sponge.
This is a plant that does best when you do less rather than more. It is a slow grower, but a plant that can last for many years if it is not fussed over too much.
Finally, I will note that there is a wide range of quality and price for this plant. Kentias are slow growers and usually very expensive. Cheaper Kentias are usually not as strong and hardy.
Good luck and please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions. If you would like to e-mail me some photos, I may be able to provide some additional insights.
