Hi Will,

I have a Coffea arabica plant that is pretty much begging to be transplanted into a larger pot. It's needing water every 2 days now (Last week it was every 3 days). The leaves seem to be having trouble standing up, they are drooping like they're not getting any water, and the pot is completely filled with roots (Not a bit o' dirt left).

So of course, I want to transplant it. I just haven't had the best results with commercial potting soil in the past, so I want to put a soil mix together that would more suitable for this Coffee's needs. Only problem is - I don't have the slightest clue about what this plant likes in its soil. So, finally, my question -

What should the soil for a Coffea arabica consist of for ideal growth?
1 part X, 1 part Y, 2 parts Z, something like that right? And should the soil be really loose around the plant, or should it be compact?

Also, here are the plant's specifications -

- 8 inches tall and growing on a daily basis.
- 3 Inch Pot.
- Light from an eastern facing window with direct morning and early afternoon sun.
- I'll send a photo as well.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the photo. That makes my job a lot easier and my answers a lot more accurate.

From the photo and your description, it does seem that your coffee plant is ready for a larger pot, one that is 5 or 6 inches in diameter.

Use a potting mix that is roughly equal parts of rich soil, peat moss and perlite. Loosen the roots around the outside of the rootball, using your fingers or a fork or knife to pry them loose. Don't worry bout tearing or cutting some of the roots. Loosening the roots will help them better integrate into the new soil.

After you have transplanted and added the new soil, pack it in pretty tightly and then water thoroughly. If the new soil sinks in some, you may need to add some additional soil.
