House Plants/Umbrella Plant care

Question
Hi,
I am very nervous. I just bought a 3 and 1/2 to 4ft. umbrella plant about a week a go and I don't really know how to care for it. I live in LA where the weather is usually pretty nice, lately it's been kind of chilly though. What is the right temperature? Does it like moist soil or dry? How about direct sunlight? How do I know when it's unhappy? About 4 leaves have falling off. That can't be good right? I really don't want to kill this beautiful plant. Please help!

Answer
Hi Yana,

There are two types of umbrella plant (Schefflera). One has smaller leaves about the 3 inches in length. The other has much larger leaves that are 5-7 inches long. Their water requirements are slightly different.

For either one it is important that you not repot them at least until they are well-adapted to their new environment. Some limited amount of leaf loss during the first couple of months is normal.

Scheffleras require lots of bright indirect light such as you would get right in front of an uncovered north or east-facing window. Do not put it outside in the sun.

Scheffleras are tropical plants that are intended for indoor use when potted. Temps should be kept above 50 degrees if you move it outside on a covered porch or patio, which I don't particularly advise.

For the large-leafed Schefflera, water it thoroughly as soon as the top inch of soil feels dry. For the smaller-leafed variety, wait until the soil is dry about one-third of the way down into the soil before watering.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions. If you would like to e-mail me some photos, I may be able to provide some additional insights.
