Question
Subject   banana leaf plant
I am not exactly sure what this plant is but I was told it was a banana tree. My friend had one in his apt and it is quite large. When he sprouted a baby, he repotted it and gave it to me but for some reason, it is doing badly. It's down to one leaf now and I can't seem to keep it alive. I was told it needed a lot of sun and I had it on the windowsill but it still keeps dying. What can I do?

Answer
Hi Monica,

Banana plants are not easy to propagate, even for those with lots of plant experience.

When the baby plant was removed it should have had some root from the mother plant attached to it. If your friend did not do that, then your baby plant is unlikely to survive. In addition, the pot size must be very small and the soil very porous and kept evenly moist. Although it likes lots of direct sun after the roots have developed, it is better in bright indirect light while the roots are still developing. Finally the soil must be kept barely damp, but not wet, for a couple of months while the new roots are growing.

As you can see, there is a lot that can go wrong in propagating a banana plant. Unless you are very experienced with plants, it would be better to try an easier plant.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
