Human Resources/Employee Suggestion Box.

Dear Pankaj

Do you consider a good HR practice to have a Employee Suggestion Box at the corporate office?.

Dear Prashant
Any practice can be good if it is followed in spirit and serves the purpose it is meant for. Also successful implementation of a practice is impacted by the cultural context of the place.

The purpose of a suggestion box in most organizations is to nurture the culture of improvements and involvement of employees in making the improvement. The involvement could also lead to enhanced engagement.

However, for this to happen well, it is important that a culture of openness exists where people know that their views will be valued and acted upon. There also needs to be a trust that they will not be judged should the suggestions be of little value. If this exists then chances are people will be willing to contribute. Quite separately, if such a culture exists then even other forms of open sessions can serve the purpose.

Nevertheless, to get it kick started will require a fair bit of communication to let people know why this is being done, to assure people on how the suggestions will be used and to create a buy in by letting them know about the consequences of making good suggestions (could be some reward/ recognition in a tangible way or intangible of an opportunity to be party to championing a good suggestion)

In the absence of either of the above, there is a danger that the box remains an empty box and the concept gets thrown away as another HR fad.

Hope this helps build some clarity. Do revert if you want me to clarify any aspect. All the best.
