Human Rights - Morality of Self Defense

Expert: Richard Aberdeen - 2/20/2005

Question
Hi,
I would like to know your opinion in regards to the issue of "is it moral to use force to protect property" and to what extent do you believe that the use of force is justifible when protecting private property?
Any help is appretiated
Thanks in advance,
  Jorge

Answer
Based on the teachings of Jesus, the founder of Human Rights, who taught that if someone tries to take your cloak (modern shirt or clothes), you should give them your coat also, it is not moral to use force to protect property.  I am the first to admit I haven't always lived up to that.  Martin Luther King, Jr. was giving a speech once and someone jumped up on the stage and hit him hard with their fist, knocking him down--King got up and offered his hand and asked if he would like to join him on stage.  Thus King literally turned the other cheek on the spur of the moment, something only very rarely done.
