Question
QUESTION: Hi Dave

I have and use only one rifle to hunt both mule deer and elk with.  It is a nice, bolt action Ruger 270.  In the past I have used two different bullets, one for deer and another for elk.  I do not hand load and my rifle shoots the Federal Premiums very well.  I would like to start using just one single bullet to hunt both deer and elk with.  If you were going to use just one bullet for hunting both deer and elk, in 270 winchester factory ammo, exactly what bullet would you buy?  Again, I prefer the Federal Premiums.

Thanks

Harmon

ANSWER: As you know, there is some tradoff (preferring t use a slightly heavier bullet for Elk).  But if you want to use only one cartridge type, the Federal Premium Vital Shock 130 gr,  P270TT1 would be good.

Hope this helps!

Dave

QUESTION: Hi Dave

Thanks for the quick answer. I did not know about that particular bullet you recommended. I have another question for you.  Again, for a single bullet to use in my 270 for both deer and elk, how would, Federal Premium Vital Shock 140 gr Nosler Accubond compare to the bullet you recommended? Would they be a good choice or would you still go with the 130 gr Trophy Bonded Tip?

Thanks

Harmon

Answer
The (larger) 140 grain might be a tad better for elk, and the 130 grain might be a tad better for muleys. I picked the 130 grain for the slightly better trajectory. But there would only be slight differences in performance either way. Both bullet types have good expansion characteristics.

Hope this helps!

Dave
