Hunting - raccoon pelt

Question
Hi!
My 12 yr old son shot his first raccoon and wants to keep the pelt. Since this was two days ago, it has been cleaned of as much fat as I can get off without cutting through to the fur. Then I spread salt on it. After the first 24 hrs I remoovd the salt and spread fresh salt. I realize the salt will dry it out and it probably won't be pliable but for his first animal I am not too concerned. I just wonder if we should be doing anything else. There is so much to research out there. Please help!!!! Thanks.

Answer
LOL, yes they are lots and lots of imformation out there, glad I can hopefully be of some help.  As you know a raccoon ccan be and is a greasy animal. By doing the salt process you did the right think. Now you can make it pliable if you want to, it will just cost a few dollars to order the right chemicals to do so, Most people just salt them, hang them on the sheld or barn streched out, but if you want a real piece of leather with the hair on to keep aroun the house, I recomend sending it to the tanneries. You can do this by just putting in a box and mailing it to them, they will ship it back in a very nice last a lifetime look and quaility. I use carolina fur   www.carolinafurdressing.com   They are a great bunch of people. If you futher like any more info, please feel free to send it to me, God Bless and have a wonderful evening, PS>>>  Give my congrats to the youngster to whom bagged this animal.  Let me know how it turns out, Chris
