Hunting - muzzle brakes

Question
i recently purchased a 91-30 mosin nagant, i put a new stock on it, and i have a scope mount on the way, but im looking for a flash suppressor/muzzle brake for it, but i can only find m44 carbine brakes, do you know where i could find some?

Answer
John, I have been away. Sorry for the delay in my answering.
I know of no military muzzle brake for the Mosin-Nagant Model 91/30. However, any good gunsmith can get the proper muzzle brake and install it for you.
The M44 and M91/30 Mosin-Nagants are basically the same, with only the length of the barrel making any difference between the two. A brake that would work on the M44 should work on the M91/30. Some shooters need a brake on an M44, because the short barrel gives more chance for unburned powder to provide recoil. The longer M91/30 shows little in the way of recoil.
Please understand that any muzzle brake will greatly increase the felt muzzle blast! This is because the brake deflects the blast to the sides and rearward, in order to reduce felt recoil. This increase in muzzle blast will damage your ears in a very short time. You must wear both ear plugs and good sound reducing ear muffs when shooting a rifle. Hearing loss is cumulative and never returns, once lost.
The cartridge fired in the M91/30, is the 7.62x54R. If you are of average height and weight and fire the rifle with the butt snuggly mounted into your shoulder, you may find that you do not require a brake to reduce recoil, because that round does not provide a lot of recoil. The more tightly you hold the butt against your shoulder, the less recoil you will feel.
My advice would be to use the rifle without a muzzle brake and see how that works for you. If you then find that you required a brake, you can always go to the expense of having one fitted.
In the field, on live game, you will never even notice any recoil. Only on the bench, will you notice recoil. Some shooters can handle more than can others, but that round is not one for which I have ever needed a muzzle brake.
Please leave feed back, as that is all that I get for doing this.
Best,
Steven L. Ashe
