Question I have a tanned elk hide(20 years old) with hair on it.
I wish to remove the hair and make a gun case for my
t/c encore. can it be done? how?
I am not familiar with any tanning process.
Answer Well it can be done but only with a razor, you will need to shave it, if you wet this hide especially at the age it is, the process back in those days were different than now, the hide would dry back out very very hard and you wou;ld not be a happy camper, shave the hair but don't shave it much , leave a soft feel to the hair and let the hair be the lining of the inside of the case, you might find a hair or two every once in a while on your gun, but would eventually spot. Sorry it took so long to get back to you, my internet has been down, God Bless and good luck to you, Hope it turns out nice.
