Question I have recently read in Guns & Ammo that the Hornady .17 Mach 2 will fit in a 22 long rifle magazine. I have two Browning Long Rifles, one semi-auto and a lever action that shoots BL 22/cal/22 Short/Long and Long Rifle. Will they shoot safely in my rifles and will they shoot accurate? Thank you for the assistance.
Answer There is no way that you want to fire a .17 caliber bullet through a .22 caliber bore.
Briefly; the .17 caliber bullet is roughly .17 inches in diameter and the .22 caliber bore on your .22 rifles, is .22 inches in diameter. Therefore the smaller .17 caliber bullet would not seal into the .22 caliber bore and would bobble on down the bore, bashing side to side until it exited. You could expect near zero accuracy. Doing this exercise is probably not dangerous, save for doing some damage to the bore and the eratic flight that the bullet would take, once it leaves the bore.
