Question
Hi, I hope I'm asking the right person about this.

About a few years ago, I was told that I have high blood pressure from a doctor. I was out of shape and had a pretty poor diet. However, over the past few years, I've lost over 40 lbs, and began to lower my consumptions. I've also NEVER have drunk alcohol in my life, or smoked a cigarette or used drugs of any sort. Although I try to maintain my weight, recently while on the vacation that I am currently on, a family member had told me that I STILL have high blood pressure because of the veins in my hands and arms that protrude 'too much.'

Here is a link of my arms and hands..

Now, from what I've been told, diet and exercise and weight loss are the best thing to do to lower blood pressure, but I'm concerned if I may still have it. I can't go to my doctor now since I'm on vacation, but I wanted to be sure if I still do have high blood pressure (From the picture), and what should I do about it?

Answer
Hi Dave,
Veins that bulge are NOT a sign of high blood pressure. During the summer months, the body tries to cool itself by shunting blood to the skin surface, ergo, bulging veins. You will not see this in cold weather. Wait till you get home and have your blood pressure checked. Enjoy the rest of your vacation and try not to listen to all those doctors that you are vacationing with ;-).
