Hypertension - Blood Pressure

Expert: Charles Cusumano, FMP, PA-C - 5/8/2009

Question
At age 22 I became pregnant with my first child. My blood pressure was 135/85 which my Dr said was great and was the same every office visit. It stayed the same through four children even one at 43. Every visit 135/85 brought me compliments on my excellent blood pressure. Now at 62 my new doctor says I must go on blood pressure medicine or he can't have me as a patient because 135/85 is way too high. How could it have been great at 22 and horrible at 62? I am a perfect weight and in very good health. I hate the thought of taking medicine I don't feel I need. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Patricia,
Back then (when you were 22) we had different standards for what was “normal” and what wasn’t. Truth be told it wasn’t “great” at age 22 either. As it stands now, your blood pressure is considered high and deserves treatment. Ideally it should be 120/70.
