Question
I'm 32yrs old 190 excersise 3x weekly about 45 mins . When I go to the
doctor my blood pressure 170/100 the doctors say it whitecoat syndrome.
When I go home and use my monitor it averages 125/77 bpm 55(doc bpm
110). I have been to cardio doc because after running I would have flip flop
feeling for about 30 seconds like a skip beat. They performed EKG echo and
24 jolted. Everthing ok also blood work at family doctor. My home monitor is
omron hem-780 is that a good one and does whitecoat syndrome sound
right?

Answer
Hi Jonathan,
There has been an ongoing debate as to whether “white coat syndrome” is a serious problem or just an anxiety reaction. I have always been on the side of the latter. If your BP goes up that much in a stress situation, my feeling is it ought to be treated. Every time your BP goes up that high, there is damage occurring to end organs. Were you my patient, I would treat this.
