Expert: Charles Cusumano, FMP, PA-C - 5/14/2009

Question
I have taken 20mg Enapril twice a day for 5 years to control my blood pressure to 120/75. Recently, it increses to 200/90 and scares me.
1. I do not have other sysptoms, such as dizzy, etc.
How high the blood pressure is dangerous? and should call 911?
2. Is it due to intaking too much salt? I have been travelling, eating many salty junk foods.
3. Can I buy some drug without pricristion instead of Enapril to lower my blood pressure?
4. Should I drink lots of water to get rid of the salt?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi David,
Well, 200/90 is way too high. Salt intake can raise blood pressure for sure.
I would limit the salt intake, drink water and see what happens. I don’t know about China but I wouldn’t buy any medicines for BP control not prescribed. Side effects are a concern and you would need to be followed. As long as you don’t have headache, dizziness, nausea, chest pain/pressure, visual changes or localized weakness in arms or legs, you are OK but I wouldn’t let that BP stay up too much longer
