Question
Could you please tell me whether there is any medical literature that could tell me the percentage chance that a person with high blood pressure will or will not suffer a heart attack? Thank you. Al Brown

Answer
This is a tough question to give an answer to since there are many factors that increase the risk of heart attack with or without the presence of hypertension. The following list begins to define risk: family history, male sex, level and duration of blood pressure elevation, cholesterol level and adequacy of treatment of hypertension. The only thing I could say from your e-mail is that you are male. More information on the above referenced risk factors might allow me to give you a better estimate. Any such estimate is only reflective of a population risk and cannot tell you the individual patient's risk per se.

Regards,

Domenic Sica, M.D.
