Question Hello Dr,
This may be an overly rudimentary question but I thought I'd ask. If a patient is taking meds for hypertension and most of their bp readings are in normal ranges except for the occasional reading that ranges higher, would they still consider their hypertension "controlled?"
My bp avgs 125/70 with medication, diet, and exercise. It has averaged this for a few months. Today my readings ran between 135/72 - 155/85.
I generally check bp once a week. Today I checked multiple times due to the higher readings. If this kindof reading happens occasionally (every month or two), can it be ignored?
At what point would the bp be considered "uncontrolled?"
thanks for your advice.
Answer Yes, you would be considered controlled. Blood pressure might be considered uncontrolled if you are above 140/90 consistently for several hours a day over a several day stretch. Blood pressure will occasionally go up in any patient as a response to environmental circumstances.
