Question
Hello,
I just recently was put on and perscribed Metoprolol Succ ER 25. I am to take one pill at day at night. How long does this pill stay in your system? I have been on this medication for almost a week now, and I am having bad dyheria, feel nauseous, some times I feel I wont have an appetite and some times I do, feel groggy and weak, tired with no motivation, and some times it feels that I cannot catch my breath. I have been checking my BP and it has been down aslong as my pulse. I do not think that my BP was too high before in the 140's. I am a 212lb 6' 25yr old male. I was told that this would only go on for a bit and then my body would get used to and level out with the medication. Should I wait it out a bit or tell my Dr.? Thank you.

Answer
Were you told why this medication was started in the first place ? 25-mg is a very small dose and would be expected to not have much effect systemically after about 8-hrs, 12-hrs tops. These symptoms are out of proportion to the dose being given. You might want to discuss this with your physician. I would be interested in hearing what was being treated with this medication at this very low dose.

Regards,

Domenic Sica, M.D.
