Hypertension - Dietary Fat

Expert: Domenic Sica - 9/29/2009

Question
Hi
I am currently being treated for hypertension.
The only recomendation my doctor made was to reduce sodium.
Would reducing dietary, especially saturated fat, also be helpfull?
There seems to be a lot of info and mis info out there-fats are good/carbs are bad, etc.
I have always had a 'fat tooth'.
I love my bacon and eggs, fatty roast beef and pork chops, pan gravy, etc.
I have a friend that shares the same tastes-we go out for breakfast a lot.
He recently suffered a massive heart attack after a large meal.
Now I am worried I could be in for the same.
My cholesteral is elevated but not in the danger zone.
Thanks for the dietary advice.

Answer
Dietary fat reduction would help from a coronary artery disease viewpoint over the long-term. As to its affect on blood pressure it would be marginal unless the dietary changes resulted in weight loss in a setting of the person being overweight to start off with.

Regards,

Domenic Sica, M.D.
