Hypertension - Can I go off or reduce my medication?

Expert: Domenic Sica - 9/2/2009

Question
Hi Dominic
Several months ago my doctor put me on Avalide to reduce my B.P.
Along with this I made some lifestyle changes including reducing alcohol, saturated fats, getting more exercise and taking some supplements that are supposed to help reduce hypertension.
I have a home blood pressure monitor and the last reading was 112/68. I dont remember it ever being that low since I started noticing my blood pressure years ago even before it got high (I am a regular blood donor over 150 donations)
I dont suffer from any side effects except for some dizzyness.
I am currently taking the 300/12.5mg.
Would it be beneficial to break those in half, see how it goes, than ask to be put on the lower dose 150/12.mg?
Or even going off it altogether while still minding my b.p?
It would be nice to be healthy enough (and easier on my wallet) to not have to take it anymore.
Thanks!

Answer
It would be quite reasonable to halve the dose and see what your blood pressure does. At that time you can report back to your physician and a decision made as to whether you are tried off the medication to see where your blood pressure settles at.

Regards,

Domenic Sica, M.D.
