About Mike De Bruyn
Expertise
I can answer questions on Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, NLP, and general personal change work. (I have some experience in EFT and EMDR, but not as much as hypnosis.) I will not debate the subject, attempt to justify it, or argue which modality is better than another. Please ask serious and specific questions so that I can give a specific answer. The more information you provide the better answer I can give. NOTE: In light of recent trolls, I will reject any question which is argumentative. I intened to provide information only to people seeking help. Those who need to argue can go elsewhere.

Experience
I trained in stage hypnosis and have worked in the field since 1968. I use traditional hypnosis, Ericksonian hypnosis and NLP in my work with private clients. I teach classes in Hypnosis and NLP and moderate the highly popular Hypnosis-Hypnotherapy group on Yahoo.

Question
QUESTION: Mike

If I can be so bold, I recommend the book NLP: The New Technology of Achievement for readers who want to learn NLP.

I have read and gone through most of the exercises, which I now know come from Richard Bandler.

One aspect of the exercises that I am having trouble with is trying to elicit my own submodalities.

For example, when I elicit the visual submodality for where I see a strong belief the images I see are not in the same location everytime.

Bandler suggest asking yourself "Do you believe the sun will come up tomorrow". When I ask myself that question I see the sun comming up but its always really dim and location changes.

Another aspect I havent mastered YET, is being able to elicit past experiences.

For example, when I ask the question "Think of a time when time seemed to be going really slow" (Time Distortion). I know I have experience it coming off a major highway onto an Exit Ramp. I have hard time locating what I seen, heard, felt at the time.

These are not necessary the easiest questions to answer on a forum. However, if you have tips or techniques to add. I know that I am only one piece away from taking it to the next level.

Pat

ANSWER: Good Morning Pat,

That is a fine book.  A great starting point.  I would also recommend that you get some of the other books by Steve Andreas and company so that you have more examples.  One other I really recommend is:

http://www.amazon.com/Core-Transformation-Reaching-Wellspring-Within/dp/09112263...

This and its companion:

http://www.amazon.com/Transforming-Your-Self-Becoming-Want/dp/0911226435/ref=sr_...

go into detail on how to uncover what is going on in your life.

As to the sun being dim, that's fine.  Dim is a submodality.  As to it's changing location, if that is so, just ignore location as a submodality.  Also, try other examples.  "Do you believe that tree in your yard will be there when you wake up in the morning?"  There are a gazillion things you take for granted like that.  Do a bunch and get an "average" of the submodalities.

Past experiences are another ball of wax ;-)  If you have trouble like that, you may very well be one of those people who have learned to automate the repression of memory.  If you had some bad experiences early on, this may well be how you learned to survive.  This makes it difficult to get at those memories.  But the solution is much the same ... try some other experiences ... something more recent, perhaps.

As to time distortion in particular, there are better ways to get to that ... but I think that might not be the point of the exercise you are doing.  IIRC, the point is to get you to that FEELING so that you can THINK about things more slowly.  In that case, actual time distortion is not what you are aiming at so much as to get to a state of relaxation and control.  In such a case, just remembering the FEELING of things slowing down is sufficient.  You don't have to remember everything about a particular incident.

Another thing you might like is Bander's "Neurosonics" programs.  There are six of them.  Lemme see here...

http://www.nlpstore.com/product.php?productid=41&cat=0&bestseller=Y

will show you what it is.  The price is a bit steep, but then that's just Bandler ;-)  You can find them around the web.  I see them on Amazon (not currently in stock), eBay, BitTorrent and a.b.paranormal all the time.  (Not that I'm saying you would ever get them there ;-)  There IS something to be said for having a clean copy rather than something downloaded, actually.  It is too bad that Bandler seems to need to get about $30 a disk for that program.  Most are content with $10!  But YMMV, of course.

Let me know how it goes and feel free to ask if you have more questions.

QUESTION: Mike

Thanks for the quick reply. I will check out your recommendations, Transforming-Your-Self-Becoming-Want looks interesting.

I appreciate your feedback, I didn't think about "dim" as being a submodality. Your suggestion of averaging submodalities is also something I didn't think of. I'm going to do that right away.

I've read before "If you had some bad experiences early on, this may well be how you learned to survive". Personally, I have a wonderful childhood with loving friends and family. I cant imagine that being the reason. I think your idea of averaging will strengthen my elicitation.

I'm curious, do you work with NLP/Hypnosis in your professional life?

Answer
Hi Pat,

Yes,"dim" is decaffeinately a submodality.

I think you will like those books I suggested.  "Core Transformations" lays out a protocol for asking uncovering questions to get at what are your core needs and values. "Transforming Yourself" builds on that.  After you work on that for a while, you might have a look the books in the MAP program ... "Know How", "Emotional Hostage", etc.  There is much work to do there ;-)

Repression:  I really don't know your particular circumstance, of course.  I can only speak in generalities but the answer I gave is the most common one.  Something caused your subconscious to decide it is better to not know than to know.

Averaging:  That is the best approach to eliminate "noise" from the experiment.  This stuff can be fun and exciting as well as helpful ;-)

Profession:  I do hypnotherapy and use NLP as an adjunct.  These days, I'm using NLP more and more as it seemes to get to the goal more quickly with less discomfort for the client.
