About Joerg Droege
Expertise
I can answer all questions regarding ICQ except those like: "I have lost my password, how do I get it back?" because I am not an ICQ Team member, so I cannot do anything about lost passwords.

Experience
I did an education as a Management Assistant in Informatics, I am using ICQ since ICQ2000b, but of course I know the current ICQ client the best. I also used the alpha ComPad ICQ client.

Education/Credentials
Management Assistant in Informatics education under the control of the CCI (Chamber of Commerce and Industry).

Question
QUESTION: Hi there! I have a huge problem, and would appreciate any help I can get.
I had XP Professional, but then switched to Home Edition. Now I can't install ICQ 6 on it, and I really, really need my old data from it back! Is there anything that can be done?

Thanks in advance!

ANSWER: Hello Michele!

Thanks for your question!

Whether you use Windows XP Professional or Home does not make any difference. What I need to know is what exactly happens what you tried and any error message you got while you tried!

Also be sure to have Service Pack 3 installed!:

START --> Run... --> winver

Also be sure to have Internet Explorer 7 installed: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

Thanks in advance!
All the best!
Bye!

QUESTION: What happens is, I run the install setup, and get the following message by the installshield wizard back: "Your operating system is not supported by ICQ6".

Does that help?

ANSWER: Hello again!

Thanks for your very good rating! Now that ICQ 6 works for you let's get to the other problem you reported.

From where is the old data? Do you have a BACKUp? From which ICQ version is the old data?

Thanks in advance!
All the best!
bye!

hello again!

install Service Pack 3. You cannot use ICQ on never updated systems. Also Service Pack 3  is ___required___ to keep the computer secure.

QUESTION: yes, the guy who reinstalled windows for me made a backup of everything.
I think I ought to be able to get my data back, especially since I'm using the exact same version of ICQ as last time, i.e. ICQ 6. However, I tried installing ICQ 6 and overwriting data in Program Files with the data from before, and it didn't work...

Answer
Hello again Michelle!

Go to &appdata% --> \ICQ\your icq number. Open "Owner.mdb" and delete the whole "History Migrator" line, this will force ICQ6 to reindex the history miner!

Hope this helps!
This will definately work! If you have any questions or problems let me know with exact what you did steps and error messages.

All the best!
Bye!
Joerg
