About Joerg Droege
Expertise
I can answer all questions regarding ICQ except those like: "I have lost my password, how do I get it back?" because I am not an ICQ Team member, so I cannot do anything about lost passwords.

Experience
I did an education as a Management Assistant in Informatics, I am using ICQ since ICQ2000b, but of course I know the current ICQ client the best. I also used the alpha ComPad ICQ client.

Education/Credentials
Management Assistant in Informatics education under the control of the CCI (Chamber of Commerce and Industry).

Question
I've been using icq for years and have been able to chat with everyone in my friends list.  Lately, I cannot join with some of my friends list in chat rooms.  We can continue to im.  When I try to join in a chat with some of my friends list I receive a message, "not responding"  then "abort".

Answer
Hi Janet!

Thanks for your question!

What most people do not understand is: ICQ Chat is nothing more than a server in the IRC network (check wikipedia for "IRC"!)

I suggest using an IRC client instead to connect to the ICQ chat server/room. Nice is e.g. is http://www.xchat.org/

But I think this is anyway because something blocks communication throught port 6666 which is the port IRC uses to connect and communicate.

See the great article at HowStuffWorks to understand what a firewall is and how it works: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/firewall.htm

Please check that no firewall blocks this communication!

IRC is NOT ICQ! ICQ is this: http://freealternative.files.wordpress.com/2007/07/icq6.png

And it's an instant messanger. See more at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_messaging

Hope this helps!
All the best!
Bye!
Joerg
