About Joerg Droege
Expertise
I can answer all questions regarding ICQ except those like: "I have lost my password, how do I get it back?" because I am not an ICQ Team member, so I cannot do anything about lost passwords.

Experience
I did an education as a Management Assistant in Informatics, I am using ICQ since ICQ2000b, but of course I know the current ICQ client the best. I also used the alpha ComPad ICQ client.

Education/Credentials
Management Assistant in Informatics education under the control of the CCI (Chamber of Commerce and Industry).

Question
Sir,

I have been using icq 5.1 and also previous versions at my work for a long time. We use http proxy to connect to the internet. I did not upgrade to version 6 since i felt all right with 5.1 till yesterday that icq alerted that i have to install the newer version to continue. I did. However i can't go online since then and it prompts me on and on that i have internet connection problems. I dont have connection problem. Problem is using proxy server, cause i managed to go online on icq 6 at home with default settings. While i was setting proxy server in "main mennu --> Options --> Connection", i noticed that "Password" field supports just eight characters and no more. Our password policy oblige us to use at least ten characters passwords. what should i do? How can i get online on ICQ 6 while i am using proxy sever with ten character password for authentication?

Yours,
Rez

Answer
Hello Rez!

Thanks for your question!

This cannot be, ICQ 5.1 and all the previous clients only supported 8 characters for passwords. If you used e.g. ICQ clone clients and entered a longer password and then tried to login with the original client you cannot login anymore because of a "connection problem".

I know this because I use ICQ since ages myself and tried it all out :)

I cannot help here, it is not possible to force ICQ 6 to allow more digits.

Sorry.

All the best!
Bye!
Joerg
