ICU/Critical Care - diarrhea and lungs

Expert: Kimberlee Bates - 4/16/2008

Question
Your discussion of weaning from vent has been so helpful.
Mom has diarrhea, negative for C Diff. Anything we can suggest? ALso, she is getting breating tx 4 x day and told she needs to breathe deep and cough. Can she do this on vent?

Answer
Does your mother have tube feeding going thru an ng tube?  If so, that may be the reason for the diarrhea.

Depending on what ventilator settings your mom is on, she may be able to take deep breaths.  Usually suctioning will illicit a cough & deep breath response.
