ICU/Critical Care/Alcohol is withdrawal during drug induced coma due to pneumonia and now memory loss...

My father fell I'll with pneumonia and had to be put into a medically induced coma due to his withdraws. I know there are a host of issues that come with it but now that he is "well" enough to be in a rehab facility he has recent event memory loss as in he does not know where he is, what time of day it is and has issues remembering who I am. He knows that I am his daughter for a little while but then doesn't. I am confused as to why this would happen. Do you have an explanation? This is a very brief synopsis of his issues so please let me know if you need more information to educational answer my question...

Dear Kelly,

Alcoholism causes changes in the brain, specifically the ventricles. Depending on how long your father has been drinking, his liver may be causing toxins to enter the brain. This is called hepatic  encephalopathy. I would discuss this with his physician.
