Question
My wife, Julie, has COPD and has been on a ventilator 3 times in last 3 years. Second time it took 7 days for Julie to wean off. This week she was unable to breath and placed back on ventilator in Intensive Care Unit. First day on vent they use 90% oxygen to help. Second day lower to 75%. Last night increase to 80%
Does this mean she will be unable to breath on her own ever and with very bad lungs (30% capacity) and long time smoker Will she be able to return home? Hospital will provide 7-10 day for ventilator however with no improvement is there any hope?

Answer
Dear Jack,

I am so sorry to hear about your wife. Due to the required nursing care, I cannot be certain she can go home. She may need a tracheostomy for her to be able to maintain an airway without being repeatedly intubated. I recommend you seek the advice of the case managers as well as social service.
