ICU/Critical Care/death from infection

A female friend of mine in Canada died shortly after having a pelvic mesh implant for a hernia. They said she developed an infection and that was the cause of death. I was just curious, when someone dies from an infection like that, do they go into a coma first? If not, are they in pain and what are the symptoms before dying from something like that?  Thanks

Dear Lee,

I am very sorry for your loss. Your friend became septic. Sepsis occurs when the infection gets out of control. It is considered a distributive shock, which means all the vessels dilate. Because of the vast dilatation, the vital organs are not able to get enough blood to sustain life. Your friend did not suffer. She would have slipped into a coma from a combination of events, including end organ failure.
