Question Thank you for taking my question an offering to help. I am unaware of what possible implications can occur by taking zithrowmax in regards to it having an effect on liver enzymes. I am considering taking 1000 mg/week.
Answer Hi Deborah,
I would recommend you discuss all this with your physician. Zithromax has been associated with liver toxicity in some patients. While this is a rare side effect, and can occur with other antibiotics as well, no one can predict which patients will develop this reaction. It usually occurs early in the antibiotic treatment, and a hepatic profile (a set of liver enzymes) can be drawn to assess liver function if there is any concern. It is possible to have liver tests drawn initially, and possibly followed periodically throughout your course of treatment. Another cause for concern is the possibility of interactions with other medications you are currently taking. Additionally, do you have any predisposing factors that may increase your risk, such as previous liver disease or damage? As always, no treatment is without risk. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication, as well as any other options that are available to you with your physician.
Take Care, Hillarie
