Subject: Broadband feedback on house phones

Question
QUESTION: I have recently installed broadband, and am getting high pitched feedback on my house phones.  I have fitted ADSL micro filters to all sockets, and all phones.  Two phones are O.K. but two phones are still screaming, why?

ANSWER: I have never seen this before. Normally the filters work just fine.

I am guessing that those particular phone types are resonating on that frequency. They are just very sensitive to it.

Are they wireless (cordless) devices?

I have seen interference with a wireless home router and cordless phones. If you also added a wireless home router along with your DSL connection, it may be that this is causing the interference with your cordless phones.

Let me know what kind of phones they are.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Yes I think you are correct.  We do have a wireless home router, and one of the two screaming phones is cordless, the other is connected to an answering machine?
Many thanks, Graham.

Answer
To avoid the interference in the wireless phone you can try moving the base station further away from the home router. Maybe in a bedroom? However, if you ever get near the home router with the handset the interference is likely to start again.

To get around it, cordless phone manufacturers have now come out with new cordless phones that are on a different frequency from the wirless router. That may also be an option for you.

The other device may be getting induced hum from the fax machine which may also be physically close to the wireless router. Try moving it.

Let me know how it goes.
