Subject: Voice Chat On Network

Question
QUESTION: hello,
i don't know is this voip or not.
but i have a network between 4 laptops with wireless connection, with no internet
i want a solution so that i can voice chat with other computers on the network,,, each computer talks to the other and listen the others.. is this possible?

ANSWER: You can use Netmeeting to do this. It is usually installed on all Windows PCs as part of the OS. If you cant find it, press START->run and type in cmd and press OK. A screen will walk you through the setup.

Once running, you can simply type in the other users IP-Address and start voice/video or desktop sharing with them, without any access to the internet whatsoever.

QUESTION: could u please give me a link to download latest netmeeting for windows xp,, as the one coming with the windows crashes... also is there netmeeting for vista?? i'm using vista and xp over this network... so i need a program that enables both... can netmeeting do this?? is there any other program?

Answer
Unfortunately, Microsoft gave up supporting Netmeeting a very long time ago. If you have version 3.01 then that is the newest they ever made. I don't even know where you would download that from if you dont have it already - its so old.

The alternative is to set up your own VoIP proxy on one of the laptops. Asterisk is a great product and is free. A windows version exists at:

http://www.asteriskwin32.com/

You will then need soft clients (telephones) for your laptops. You can use X-Lite for that as it is free too:

http://www.counterpath.com/13

You can then assign a "phone number" to each person. They can dial the person they want to speak to and get voice / video.

It all works without any connection to the internet.
