IP Telephony - voip

Expert: Gerry Magill - 4/10/2008

Question
Does a ip telephony connect direct to router 2801

Answer
Hi,

First of all it depends on which Cisco IOS you are running on the 2801 and whether it has the necessary voip feature set in it or not.

Secondly, the SIP variant of the IOS does not contain a proxy. For stand-alone mode like you want to use, Cisco uses a proprietory protocol called Skinny. Only Cisco voip phone speak this protocol.

So if you have the correct IOS and Cisco phones that have the Skinny protocol, you can connect them directly for very basic phone service.
