IP Telephony - fax/printer/scanner/copier,....landline

Expert: Gerry Magill - 7/15/2009

Question
Hi Gerry,
Installed a Brother scanner/printer/copier/fax machine (MFC-290c) and now landline phone plugged into computer doesn't work. Found out MFC is not voip compatable (must not use a splitter on DSL line-has to be stand alone unit) but when I take it offline and reboot ALL (modem, router, computer, etc.) phone still won't work. All cables, wiring, and connections are good. Even plugging directly into DSL line by itself doesn't work. Can't seem to restart computer phone plugin. Using DSL filters. Never had problem before. Phone works in any other phone jack in any other room. All other phones work. Thanks.

Answer
When you say you have a landline what do you mean? Is your phone service a standard plain old telephony system or are you using VoIP? You referred to that and it confused me.

I am guessing you have a regular plain old telephone system and do DSL over it to your computer, right?

If that is the case, have you tried to connect the MFC directly to the phone jack? Do you get dial tone? If that doesn't work, then the DSL is causing so much interference that it will never work.

Where is your splitter box? Is it outside the house?
