Subject: Free travel huts, walking the island in a month, etc.

Question
I am coming to Iceland early September for a month. I plan on
walking/perhaps hitch-hiking it around the entire island at a non-rushed
pace.

So.. just a few questions: Are there any maps of these free travel huts? Are
campgrounds free? Can I put my tent up anywhere I'd like? Can I light a fire?
Is a month enough time to make it around? I am on a very limited budget.
How much money will it cost to tent the island for a month?

There are huts owned by different organisations, which you pay for. Here is the map for one organisation:

You are not allowed to sleep in the emergency huts.

I believe there are some huts which are free but not emergency huts, but I don't know about any maps of them.

I'd say it's quite possible to hitchhike around Iceland in a month in September. It'll be easiest in the south west.

It's hard to guess what you will spend - presumably just groceries and camp site/hut fees, maybe a bus fare if you get stuck.
