AboutLaurence Koster Expertise I can answer questions about Iceland - travelling in Iceland, going on holiday to Iceland, living in Iceland, Icelandic language, food, literature and films.
Question I've been learning Icelandic for the past year, and have come to a stop in the road. Where is the best place to learn icelandic? (besides, of course, visiting the country and learning) I am planning to move there and will pick up on the language as I go. Is it easy for them to tell an American from an Icelander just by the accent? (I mean, is it easy to "blend in" when speaking Icelandic?) Thanks for your help!
Answer Hello Gloria,
It's very difficult to learn Icelandic outside the country, because unless you go to Iceland, there's little or no opportunity to practise.
The best substitute is a course with CDs.
Of course the Icelanders will be able to tell the difference between a native speaker and a foreigner, especially one who's been learning from a book for a year.
However, you will stand out from other foreigners by having made a real effort to learn, and people will admire and respect this. It will make you look like more than 'just another tourist'.
